Why is dancer in the dark rated r

That's the screening where all the real movie people attend--the critics, festival heads, distributors, exhibitors, film teachers, other directors, etc. After the screening, the auditorium filled with booing and cheering--so equal in measure that people started booing or cheering at each other. I sat in my seat, ready to cheer or boo when I made up my mind. I let the movie marinate, and saw it again, and was able to see what von Trier was trying to do.

Having made a "vow of chastity" with his famous Dogma 95 statement, which calls for films to be made more simply with hand-held cameras and available light, he is now divesting himself of modern fashions in plotting. The relatively crude visual look underlines the movie's abandonment of slick modernism. It is not a "well made film," is not in "good taste," is not "plausible" or, for many people, "entertaining.

It returns to the wellsprings. It is a bold, reckless gesture. And since Bjork has announced that she will never make another movie, it is a good thing she sings.

Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from until his death in In , he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism.

Rated R For Some Violence. David Morse as Bill. Peter Stormare as Jeff. Bjork as Selma. Catherine Deneuve as Kathy. Joel Grey as Oldrich Novy. Reviews Dancer In The Dark. Selma is gradually going blind, and as the disease is genetic she is fully aware that her beloved son and only child Gene will one day too become blind.

Nothing else matters to her apart from attaining this goal. Selma—aware yet undaunted by the reality that one day her world will no longer consist of sight—finds ineffable joy in musicals. She also uses the outlet of going to the cinema to watch musicals as a means of escapism. In many scenes in the film the drudgery and ordinariness of everyday life is transformed by Selma into a wonderful musical where there is never a last song. The scene in the factory where even the dull monotonous clanking and hammering sounds of the machines are transformed into joyous music is particularly brilliant and moving.

I strongly believe that to give away more of the plot does the movie a great injustice. Lines on screen : They say it's the last song.
